Nandi Citadel was envisioned to celebrate the cultural plurality and traditional heritage of Bangalore, creating a new native place for the new generation. The initial design intent for Nandi Citadel was to recapture the essence of the semilattice structure of the old city of Jaisalmer, which also has a high density city structure, through cultural touch points and creating culturally inspired green spaces in between the built form. To achieve this, the design process was mainly approached through two main contexts, i.e.,
1. A new native place through nature
2. A new native place through neighborhood design
Many horticulture based design interventions were incorporated to create the experience of a new native place through nature. Urban wetlands were designed as a response to the site being situated adjacent to a lake. The process of design and planning was also approached, acknowledging the needs of the community.
A new native place through neighborhood design was achieved by creating amenities catering to every age demographic. A conscious decision was made to incorporate traditional landscape elements like sacred tree gardens and traditional board games to educate the younger generation and create a nostalgic experience for the older generation.
